2020 NBA Draft Composite Rankings

LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards
LaMelo Ball (left) edged Anthony Edwards (right) for the No. 1 spot in HP's 2020 NBA Draft Composite Rankings.

With 2020 NBA Draft just a few days a way, most draft boards/big boards are finalized or nearly so.  The NBA Combine is over, the deadline to withdraw has passed, and everyone has had plenty of time to study film.  With that said, I present the Hoops Prospects’ 2020 NBA Draft Composite Rankings, which involved combining the the draft boards of 10 sources (listed below).  The scoring/ranking system was rather simple.  For each pick, a prospect received points equal to 151 – the prospect’s ranking.  So, for example, if someone ranked LaMelo Ball No. 1, he’d receive 150 points from that source.  If someone ranked Ball at No. 50, he’d receive 101 points.  If a player was unranked by a particular source, the player would receive zero points from that source.

The Sources

Going left to right on the composite chart, the sources were as follows:

  • Hoops Prospects (HP) — I have the final call on the official HP rankings, but I receive a lot of input from all of our writers.  The HP rankings go 200 deep, but for this project, I limited the list to 150 because no other sources go beyond 100.
  • Dustin Barnes (DB) — Dustin is regular contributor to HP.
  • Lee Branscome (LB) — Lee is not only a regular contributor to HP, but also my partner when we interview draft prospects.
  • Clayton Conover (CC) — Clayton is one of the newest additions to the HP team.
  • The Athletic (Ath) — The latest “Big Board” available from Sam Vecenie features one player who pulled out of the draft on November 8.  I went back to his previous rankings, and added the highest ranked player available (Nenad Dimitrijevic) to the end at 100.
  • CBS Sports — There is no post date, but these rankings appear to have been updated recently.
  • ESPN — If nothing else, ESPN does an excellent job at keeping its rankings updated.
  • NBA Draft (NBA) — This “Big Board” says it was updated on November 14, but has three players listed who are not in the draft.
  • Rookie Wire (RW) — Their latest draft board features four players who have pulled out of the draft.  I was able to go back to their previous rankings and add the highest ranked available to the end, starting with Breein Tyree at 97.
  • Sports Illustrated (SI) — SI’s draft board never goes higher than 80 deep, but these rankings were updated very recently.
